My evening in order

I can put my evening in order: eating, teeth, a story, sleep, and add my own step.

The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

Four numbered pictures in a row, deliberately out of order: reading together, sleeping, eating, and brushing teeth, each with a box for the order number. Below them one frame with a writing line for a fifth step of the child's own.

Skill: Sequencing the child's own evening and owning the routine. You will need: a pencil, crayons or pencils. Your role: discuss. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can put my evening in order: eating, teeth, a story, sleep, and add my own step.

  2. 2

Listen

Which happens first in your evening? Write 1 under it.

  3. 3

Explore

Then 2, 3 and 4. Say the evening aloud as you go.

  4. 4

Try

Something you do that is not on the page: draw it in the frame. Where does it fit?

  5. 5

Share

Tonight, say the order before each step. Was it the same?

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Two pictures: eating and sleeping. Which is first?

Core

The sheet as printed

All four numbered and the fifth step drawn.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

The child tells the evening backwards, from sleep to dinner.
