How the fifteen minutes go
The five steps on this sheet, in the order a child meets them. This is what you will actually be doing, not a description of the method.

Wonder
Look at the six pictures. What can you see?
اُنْظُرْ إِلَى الصُّوَرِ السِّتِّ. مَاذَا تَرَى؟

Listen
Your grown-up will say one word. Only listen, do not point yet.
سَيَقُولُ لَكَ الْكَبِيرُ كَلِمَةً وَاحِدَةً. اِسْتَمِعْ فَقَطْ، وَلَا تُشِرْ بَعْدُ.

Explore
Now point to the picture. Say the word back.
الْآنَ أَشِرْ إِلَى الصُّورَةِ، وَقُلِ الْكَلِمَةَ.

Try
If you point to the wrong one, that is fine. Listen again and try another.
إِنْ أَشَرْتَ إِلَى صُورَةٍ أُخْرَى فَلَا بَأْسَ. اِسْتَمِعْ مَرَّةً ثَانِيَةً وَحَاوِلْ.

What to say, word for word
You do not have to invent the words. Everything in quotation marks is written to be read aloud exactly as it is, fully vocalised, so the pronunciation is decided for you. The grey line under each is what to watch for while you say it.
Before you start
لا تحتاج شيئًا سوى الورقة. اجلس بجانب طفلك، لا في مواجهته، لينظر كلاكما إلى الصور نفسها.

«اُنْظُرْ إِلَى هَذِهِ الصُّوَرِ السِّتِّ. مَاذَا تَرَى؟»
أشِر إلى الصور كلّها بحركة واحدة، ثم اصمت. دَعه يسمّي ما يعرفه، ولو بكلمة واحدة.

Listen
«سَأَقُولُ كَلِمَةً وَاحِدَةً. اِسْتَمِعْ فَقَطْ، وَلَا تُشِرْ بَعْدُ.»
قل الكلمة مرة واحدة، بصوت عادي وواضح. ثم اصمت خمس ثوانٍ كاملة. الصمت هو ما يجعله يفكّر.

«الْآنَ أَشِرْ إِلَى الصُّورَةِ. وَقُلِ الْكَلِمَةَ مَعِي.»
انتظر إشارته قبل أن تتكلم. إذا نطق الكلمة بعدك، فقد ربط الصوت بالصورة، وهذا هو الهدف.

Try
«إِنْ أَشَرْتَ إِلَى صُورَةٍ أُخْرَى فَلَا بَأْسَ. سَأَقُولُهَا مَرَّةً ثَانِيَةً.»
أعد الكلمة أبطأ، لا أعلى. رفع الصوت لا يوضّح الكلمة، والبطء يوضّحها.

اسمع الجواب كاملًا دون مقاطعة. هذه اللحظة لغة، لا اختبار.
Watch for
لاحظ متى يُشير: قبل أن تنتهي الكلمة أم بعدها. الإشارة المبكّرة تخمين، لا استماع.
They have got it when
إذا أشار إلى أربع صور من ستّ بشكل صحيح دون تردّد، فقد بلغ الهدف.
Never do this
لا تُشِر أنت إلى الصورة الصحيحة وأنت تسأل. عيناك تدلّانه قبل أن يفكّر.

Use three pictures instead of six. Say the word twice.
Fewer items, more pictures, hints included, parent reads the instructions.
Core
Six pictures. Say the word once.
The standard task, recognition, practice and explanation.
Challenge
Say two words together, point to both, in order.
Open-ended. Explain why, make your own example, use it somewhere new.

The answers
There is no wrong answer to the last question. The task is listening, not naming.
If they get stuck
Say the word more slowly, not more loudly. Then name two pictures and let them choose between the two.
Common mistakes
- Pointing before the word is finished, a habit worth breaking early.
- Guessing from the first sound alone.
When they finish early
Play it with real objects in the room instead of pictures.
