What does the wind move?

I can say what the wind can move and what it cannot, and try it with my breath.

The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

Two boxes, the wind moves it and the wind cannot move it, and eight pictures to sort: a feather, a bubble, a cloud, a flower, a mountain, a house, a car and a stone well.

Skill: Reasoning about weight and force from what the child has seen wind do. You will need: scissors or a finger to point, a windy day, or your own breath. Your role: discuss. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can say what the wind can move and what it cannot, and try it with my breath.

  2. 2

Listen

Name each one, then say: the wind moves it, or the wind cannot.

  3. 3

Explore

Put each picture in its box.

  4. 4

Try

Blow on a feather, then on a book. What did your breath move?

  5. 5

Share

Look out of the window on a windy day and find three things moving.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Four pictures: the feather, the bubble, the mountain, the house.

Core

The sheet as printed

All eight sorted, the breath test done on two real things.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Order the moving ones from easiest to move to hardest.
