What melts?

I can guess what will melt in warm water, then put it in and see.

The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

Four numbered pictures across the top: ice, honey, bread and a ball. Below them a chart with the same four rows and two columns to tick: I think, and I saw.

Skill: Predicting a change, trying it, and recording both the guess and the result. You will need: four cups of warm water, an ice cube, a spoon of honey, a piece of bread, a small ball, a pencil. Your role: check. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can guess what will melt in warm water, then put it in and see.

  2. 2

Listen

Before touching anything, tick 'I think' for the ones you believe will melt.

  3. 3

Explore

Put each one in its own cup of warm water. Wait and watch.

  4. 4

Try

Tick 'I saw' for what really melted. Compare the two columns.

  5. 5

Share

Were you surprised by one? Which?

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Two cups: the ice and the ball. Guess, then watch.

Core

The sheet as printed

Four cups, both columns filled, the surprise named.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Say what happened to the bread in words. It did not melt; what did it do?
