Where does the water come from?

I can put the water's journey in order, from the sea to the cloud to the rain to my tap.

The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

Six numbered pictures in two rows of three: the sea, a cloud, rain, a mountain, a waterfall and a tap. The child writes the order of the journey in each box.

Skill: Ordering a cycle: the first sheet where the last picture leads back to the first. You will need: a pencil, a tap. Your role: discuss. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can put the water's journey in order, from the sea to the cloud to the rain to my tap.

  2. 2

Listen

The sun warms the sea and the water goes up into a cloud. Point to the sea, then the cloud.

  3. 3

Explore

Write 1 on the sea, 2 on the cloud. Keep going: where does the rain fall?

  4. 4

Try

After the tap, where does the water go? Back to the sea. Draw the arrow.

  5. 5

Share

Turn on the tap and tell the whole journey in your own words.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Three pictures: sea, cloud, rain. The adult tells the story once first.

Core

The sheet as printed

All six numbered, the loop drawn back to the sea.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Tell the journey backwards, from the tap to the sea.
