I watched it change

I can choose one thing, look at it every day for five days, and say what changed.

The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

Three numbered pictures to choose from across the top: a flower, a banana and bread. Then five drawing frames in a row, day 1 to day 5, and two writing lines for what changed.

Skill: Observing one thing for five days and saying what changed. You will need: crayons or pencils, one thing to watch: a flower in water, a banana, a piece of bread, five days. Your role: observe. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can choose one thing, look at it every day for five days, and say what changed.

  2. 2

Listen

Today is day 1. Draw it exactly as it is now. Look before you draw.

  3. 3

Explore

Every day, one drawing, in the next frame. Same thing, same place.

  4. 4

Try

On day 5, put the five drawings side by side. What is different?

  5. 5

Share

Say what changed in a sentence, and your grown-up writes it on the lines.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Three days instead of five, with the adult pointing at what to look at.

Core

The sheet as printed

Five drawings and the sentence about the change.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Guess on day 1 what day 5 will look like, and compare at the end.
