The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

A row of six apples across the top, then two large empty frames side by side, one titled for me and one for you, where the child draws each person's share.

Skill: Halving a small set so that two people get the same. You will need: crayons or pencils, six real apples, grapes or blocks, if you have them. Your role: check. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can share six apples between two people so that both have the same.

  2. 2

Listen

One for me, one for you. Say it as you draw an apple on each plate.

  3. 3

Explore

Keep going until the row is finished. Count each plate.

  4. 4

Try

Is it fair? How do you know?

  5. 5

Share

Do it with real things: six grapes, two people.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Four apples instead of six; cover two with a finger.

Core

The sheet as printed

Six apples shared, both plates counted, 'fair' said with a reason.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Share five. What happens to the last one? Talk about it.
