Sweet or sour?

2 pages, 288 KB. Page 1 is for your child. Page 2 is the guide, and you can read it on your phone instead of printing it.
Before you start
Three moments, no test
- 1
If they get stuck
Another day
What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet
Honey and a lemon side by side, then a chart of four foods (an apple, a mandarin, a banana, a tomato) with four columns: my guess sweet, my guess sour, tasted sweet, tasted sour.
Skill: Predicting a taste, then checking by tasting and recording both. You will need: a slice each of an apple, a mandarin, a banana and a tomato, or any four foods the child already eats, a pencil. Your role: check. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs
Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.
- 1
Wonder
I can guess whether a food is sweet or sour, then taste it and find out.
- 2
Listen
Four foods. Before tasting, mark your guess for each one.
- 3
Explore
Taste a small piece. Sweet or sour? Mark what you found.
- 4

Look at the two marks side by side. Were you right?
- 5
Share
Which one surprised you? Tell someone at the table.
One sheet, three ways to pitch it
Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.
Support
If the sheet is new or the child is tired
Two foods: one clearly sweet, one clearly sour.
Core
The sheet as printed
Four foods, a guess and a result for each.
Challenge
If it was easy, or on the second day
Find a food that is neither, and say what it is instead: salty, or nothing much.
This sheet is also part of the main library under its subject shelf.
