The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. Colour is part of this activity: print in colour, or keep the pictures on screen and use real coloured objects. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

Four colour squares down the page, red, blue, green, yellow, each beside a large empty box for the child to draw what they found, and one line to name it. A small box at the bottom: the hardest colour was.

Skill: Matching a colour to real objects, away from the page. You will need: crayons, your own house. Your role: observe. Colour is part of this one: print in colour, or keep the pictures on screen and use real objects.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can find each colour somewhere in my house and draw what I found.

  2. 2

Listen

One thing per colour, and it has to be real. No drawing from your head.

  3. 3

Explore

Go and hunt. Bring it back if you can carry it.

  4. 4

Think

Which colour was hardest to find? Why do you think that is?

  5. 5

Share

Show your four things to somebody and name each colour.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Two colours, red and blue.

Core

The sheet as printed

Four colours, one thing each.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Two different things for the same colour, and say which is redder.
