The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

Four fruit pictures with their words, تُفَّاحَة (an apple), مَوْزَة (a banana), تِين (figs), بُرْتُقَالَة (an orange), under the line that this fruit is for two people: the grown-up cuts and the child decides. Then a prompt, قَسِّمْهَا، ثُمَّ تَحَقَّقْ (share it out, then check), with a tick box الطَّبَقَانِ مُتَسَاوِيَانِ (the two plates are equal) and another, قَارَنْتُ الْكَمِّيَّتَيْنِ (I compared the two amounts).

Skill: Sharing a real quantity fairly, and checking that it is fair. You will need: an apple, a banana and two figs, a plate each, an adult with a knife. Your role: check. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

Share similar fruit pieces between two plates and compare the portions.

  2. 2

Listen

The grown-up cuts. You decide where each piece goes.

  3. 3

Explore

Share it out. Two figs is easy. One apple is not.

  4. 4

Think

Are the plates the same? How can you be sure?

  5. 5

Share

Give one plate away and eat the other. Would you swap?

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Two figs and two banana halves. Everything already even.

Core

The sheet as printed

One apple, one banana, two figs.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Three people, same fruit. Now what?
