The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

Two large pictures side by side, a sad child and a child playing with clay, each with a question beneath: (what might they say?) and (what do they like to do?). Then a prompt, نُمَثِّلُ حِوَارًا قَصِيرًا (we act out a short conversation), with a note to ask the character how they feel. A note at the top says to choose one picture, and that in real life we ask the person.

Skill: Imagining a character’s feelings and possible story. You will need: nothing at all. Your role: read aloud. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

Imagine how a character might feel and what might have happened.

  2. 2

Listen

Your grown-up says one feeling. Only listen.

  3. 3

Explore

Point to the face. Then make that face yourself.

  4. 4

Try

If you point to another one, that is fine. Faces are hard.

  5. 5

Share

Which face have you made today?

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Three faces: laughing, sad, sleepy. The three a two-year-old already reads.

Core

The sheet as printed

Six faces.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Say WHY someone might feel that, not just which face it is.
