In the sky, or here with us?

Before you start

Three moments, no test

  1. 1

If they get stuck

Another day

What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet

Two empty labelled boxes, فِي السَّمَاء (in the sky) and عِنْدَنَا (down here with us), above a strip of eight cut-out pictures with their words: شَمْس، عُصْفُور، نَجْمَة صَفْرَاء، سَحَابَة، زَهْرَة، بَيْت، قِطّ، سَيَّارَة (sun, bird, yellow star, cloud, flower, house, cat, car). A note says the cloud is the hard one, so say why you chose what you chose.

Skill: Sorting what belongs to the sky from what belongs to the street. You will need: nothing at all. Your role: check. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can say which things are up in the sky and which are here around me.

  2. 2

Listen

Two boxes: one for the sky, one for here.

  3. 3

Explore

Put each picture where it belongs.

  4. 4

Try

The cloud is the hard one. Where did you put it?

  5. 5

Share

Go to the window and find one of each, for real.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Four pictures only: the sun, the star, the house, the cat.

Core

The sheet as printed

All eight.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Add two of your own, one for each box, drawn on the back.

This sheet is also part of the main library under its subject shelf.
