Look closely and draw

Before you start

Three moments, no test

  1. 1

If they get stuck

Another day

What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet

A female explorer with a magnifying glass and a woman scientist, then four pictures (a hand, an apple, bread, a flower) each with an empty box under it for the close drawing.

Skill: Observing a familiar thing up close and recording what is seen. You will need: crayons or pencils, a magnifying glass if you have one, an apple, a piece of bread, a flower, and the child's own hand. Your role: observe. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can look at something very closely and draw what I see.

  2. 2

Listen

Four things: your hand, an apple, bread, a flower. Look at one very closely.

  3. 3

Explore

Say what you see: lines, dots, holes, hairs.

  4. 4

Try

Draw it in the box under its picture. Only what you saw.

  5. 5

Share

Show someone your drawing and tell them where the lines are.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

One thing: the hand, with the adult pointing out one line.

Core

The sheet as printed

Four things looked at and drawn.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Look at the back of the hand and then the palm. Draw what is different.

This sheet is also part of the main library under its subject shelf.
