The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

Four cut-out cards that become a book, numbered and captioned الْبِدَايَةُ (the beginning), مَاذَا حَدَثَ؟ (what happened?), مَاذَا فَعَلَ؟ (what did they do?), النِّهَايَةُ (the end). Each card is an empty frame with a line beneath for the grown-up to write the child's words. A note says the grown-up cuts the cards, puts them in order and clips them at the right. No pictures anywhere: the emptiness is the sheet.

Skill: Making a whole story from nothing, and being its author. You will need: crayons, scissors for the adult, a paper clip. Your role: observe. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

Tell and draw a story, then have an adult assemble the four cards.

  2. 2

Listen

Say the whole story out loud first, before you draw anything.

  3. 3

Explore

Now draw it, one page at a time, in the order you said it.

  4. 4

Try

If page three will not work, change page two. Authors do that.

  5. 5

Share

Put your name on the cover. Read it to someone tonight.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Two pages: what happened, and what happened next.

Core

The sheet as printed

Four pages: beginning, problem, try, end.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Give it a title before you draw, and make the story match it.
