Three pictures, two stories

I can make two different stories out of the same three pictures.

The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

Three large cut-out picture cards with scissors lines: a dog, rain, a hug. Below, two empty strips of three landing boxes each, labelled first story and second story, so both orders can be seen at once.

Skill: Seeing that order makes meaning, the same parts, a different story. You will need: scissors, for the grown-up. Your role: discuss. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can make two different stories out of the same three pictures.

  2. 2

Listen

Put them in any order you like. Then tell it.

  3. 3

Explore

Now move ONE picture. Tell it again.

  4. 4

Think

Same pictures. Different story. How did that happen?

  5. 5

Share

Which of your two stories do you like better, and why?

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Two pictures only, swapped. The idea survives at two.

Core

The sheet as printed

Three pictures, two orders.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Find an order that makes a sad story and one that makes a happy one.
