Colours on my plate

I can name the colour of each fruit and vegetable, then find three colours on my own plate.

The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

A grid of six fruit and vegetable pictures with their Arabic names, then one large empty frame captioned my plate. Nothing is pre-drawn in the frame: the child draws the plate that was actually in front of them.

Skill: Naming the colour of fruit and vegetables, then finding colours on a real plate. You will need: crayons or pencils. Your role: observe. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can name the colour of each fruit and vegetable, then find three colours on my own plate.

  2. 2

Listen

Say it out loud before anyone says it for you.

  3. 3

Explore

Now look at your real plate. How many colours are there?

  4. 4

Try

Find three colours that came from a plant.

  5. 5

Share

Draw your plate exactly as it is, in its colours.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Pointing at the colour in the picture is the whole activity. The drawing is optional.

Core

The sheet as printed

All six colours named, and the plate drawn with three colours.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Find a plant colour in the kitchen that is not in the pictures.
