Who lives in the sea?

Before you start

Three moments, no test

  1. 1

If they get stuck

Another day

What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet

Two labelled empty boxes, then a strip of six animal pictures with their Arabic names: fish, cat, shark, rabbit, dolphin, snail.

Skill: Sorting animals by where they live, and giving a reason. You will need: nothing at all. Your role: discuss. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can say who lives in the sea and who lives on land, and say why.

  2. 2

Listen

Two boxes: in the sea, and on land.

  3. 3

Explore

Point to where each one lives.

  4. 4

Try

The snail is the hard one. Where would you put it?

  5. 5

Share

Say one reason out loud: it has fins, it has legs.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Three animals, and pointing is a full answer.

Core

The sheet as printed

All six placed, and one reason said out loud.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Name an animal that is not on the page and say where it lives.

This sheet is also part of the main library under its subject shelf.
