How the fifteen minutes go

The five steps on this sheet, in the order a child meets them. This is what you will actually be doing, not a description of the method.

  1. 1

    Wonder

This spoon, sink or float? Guess before you know.

  2. 2

    Listen

Your grown-up writes down your guess. No changing it later.

  3. 3

    Explore

Now drop it in. What happened?

  4. 4

    Share

Tell someone about the one that surprised you.

What to say, word for word

You do not have to invent the words. Everything in quotation marks is written to be read aloud exactly as it is, fully vocalised, so the pronunciation is decided for you. The grey line under each is what to watch for while you say it.

Before you start

  1. 1

    Wonder

  2. 2

    Listen

  3. 3

    Explore

  4. 4

    think

  5. 5

    Share

Watch for

They have got it when

Never do this

Three levels in the same pack

Print the one that fits today. Same skill, three depths — and on this sheet they differ like this.

Support

Three objects, one obviously each way.

Fewer items, more pictures, hints included, parent reads the instructions.

Core

Five objects including one surprising.

The standard task, recognition, practice and explanation.

Challenge

Guess WHY, not just what.

Open-ended. Explain why, make your own example, use it somewhere new.

For the grown-up

The same guide that is printed on the back page, so you can read it before you decide to print anything.

The answers

Depends on the objects. Include one surprise, a large light thing that floats, or a small heavy thing that sinks, because the surprise is where the learning is.

If they get stuck

Do the first one together, and let them see you guess wrong.

Common mistakes

  • Changing the guess after seeing the result. The written guess is the whole method; protect it.
  • An adult saying 'wrong'. The word is 'surprising'.

When they finish early

Try to make something that sinks, float, foil boat, anything.
