The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

Two pairs of pictures, one pair per row, each picture with its vowelled word and a row of small empty boxes beneath to colour one per clap: قِطّ (cat) beside سُلَحْفَاة (turtle), and دُبّ (bear) beside مَدْرَسَة (school). The short word and the long word sit side by side, so the difference in claps is the whole lesson.

Skill: Comparing two words by length in sound, not by the size of the thing. You will need: nothing at all. Your role: check. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can clap two words and say which one is longer.

  2. 2

Listen

Clap them both.

  3. 3

Explore

Which word took more claps? Circle the longer word.

  4. 4

Think

A bear is huge. Is its word long?

  5. 5

Share

Whose name in this house is the longest?

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Two pairs, very different: قِطّ and سُلَحْفَاة.

Core

The sheet as printed

Four pairs.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Find a small thing with a long word and a big thing with a short one.
