The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

Four rows of three pictures with the vowelled word under each: In each row the child circles the two pictures whose words end with the same sound. A note asks the grown-up to say the words clearly and listen to the ending.

Skill: Listening for similar endings in spoken words. You will need: crayon. Your role: read aloud. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can hear the last sound in a word.

  2. 2

Listen

Say it slowly. What is the very last thing your mouth does?

  3. 3

Explore

Four pictures. Circle the two that end the same.

  4. 4

Try

Say each one out loud and stretch the end:

  5. 5

Share

Find something in the room that ends like your own name.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Two pictures at a time, obviously same or different.

Core

The sheet as printed

Four pictures, find the pair.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Say a word that ends like this one but is not on the page.
