How the fifteen minutes go

The five steps on this sheet, in the order a child meets them. This is what you will actually be doing, not a description of the method.

  1. 1

    Wonder

If I say بـ … ابْ, what word is hiding?

  2. 2

    Listen

Your grown-up says the two parts with a pause between.

  3. 3

    Explore

Say them faster. Faster again. Now they join.

  4. 4

    Share

Now you split a word and let your grown-up guess.

Three levels in the same pack

Print the one that fits today. Same skill, three depths — and on this sheet they differ like this.

Support

Two-part words only, and the grown-up joins them first as a model.

Fewer items, more pictures, hints included, parent reads the instructions.

Core

Six words, the child blends and points.

The standard task, recognition, practice and explanation.

Challenge

The child splits the word for the adult, much harder than joining.

Open-ended. Explain why, make your own example, use it somewhere new.

For the grown-up

The same guide that is printed on the back page, so you can read it before you decide to print anything.

The answers

بـ+اب = بَاب · قـ+ط = قِطّ · شـ+مس = شَمْس · مـ+اء = مَاء · بـ+يت = بَيْت · دا+ر = دَار

If they get stuck

Shorten the gap between the parts until it disappears. Do not shorten the word.

Common mistakes

  • Repeating the two parts instead of joining them. Model it once, then wait.
  • Guessing from the picture rather than the sound. Cover the pictures for the first two.

When they finish early

Play it with no paper at all, in the car.
