Here, everything falls

Before you start

Three moments, no test

  1. 1

If they get stuck

Another day

What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet

An astronaut floating and a space station, then a chart of four things to drop with a guess column and a result column.

Skill: Predicting, then observing, how different things fall. You will need: a small ball, a spoon, a sheet of paper, and a tissue or a feather. Your role: check. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can guess whether a thing falls fast or slowly, then drop it and watch.

  2. 2

Listen

Mark your guess before each drop.

  3. 3

Explore

Drop each thing from the same height, arm stretched out.

  4. 4

Try

Mark the ones that fell fast.

  5. 5

Share

Crumple the paper into a ball and drop it again. What changed?

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Two things only: the ball and the paper.

Core

The sheet as printed

All four, a guess and then a drop for each.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Crumple the paper, drop it again, and say what changed.

This sheet is also part of the main library under its subject shelf.
