Counting in the sea, up to seven

Before you start

Three moments, no test

  1. 1

If they get stuck

Another day

What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet

Four rows of one repeated sea picture each (blue fish, shell, red fish, dolphin), every row ending in an answer box. Each picture is a single object.

Skill: Counting groups of four to seven by touching each one once. You will need: a pencil. Your role: check. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can touch and count up to seven, and write how many.

  2. 2

Listen

Touch each one once as you count.

  3. 3

Explore

Write the number in the box.

  4. 4

Try

    Finish all four rows.

  5. 5

Share

Count seven real things: spoons, shells, socks.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Two rows, and the adult writes the number the child says.

Core

The sheet as printed

All four rows, each picture touched once.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Which row has the most? Which has the fewest? How do you know?

This sheet is also part of the main library under its subject shelf.
