The name of my country

Before you start
Three moments, no test
- 1
If they get stuck
Another day
What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet
Three framed boxes in a row, headed the name of my country, the name of my city, and the first letter, each with a writing line under it.
Skill: Seeing the name of the child's country written, tracing it, and finding its first letter. You will need: crayons or pencils. Your role: read aloud. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs
Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.
- 1
Wonder
I can see the name of my country and my city written big, trace them, and point to the first letter.
- 2
Listen
Say each name after your grown-up. Clap its parts.
- 3
Explore
Trace over the letters with a colour, or go round them with your finger.
- 4
Try
Which letter comes first in your country's name? Draw it big in the bottom frame.
- 5
Share
Find that first letter somewhere in the house: a sign, a book, a packet.
One sheet, three ways to pitch it
Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.
Support
If the sheet is new or the child is tired
The country's name only, traced with a finger, not a crayon.
Core
The sheet as printed
Both names traced and the first letter found.
Challenge
If it was easy, or on the second day
The child writes the first letter alone, then finds the same letter in their own name if it is there.
This sheet is also part of the main library under its subject shelf.
