Before you start
Three moments, no test
- 1
If they get stuck
Another day
What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet
Four numbered picture cards in two rows, numbered from the right: No words printed. One line at the top says (I choose a picture and talk about it).
Skill: Choosing a picture and saying something about it. You will need: nothing at all. Your role: discuss. Prints well in black and white.
How the activity runs
Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.
- 1
Wonder
I can choose an animal and say what I see.
- 2
Listen
Your grown-up starts: I see a giraffe. It has a long neck.
- 3
Explore
Choose a picture. Say its name, then one thing you see in it: a colour, a part, what it is doing.
- 4
Try
Choose another picture and say something different about it.
- 5
Share
Which animal would you like to see for real? Tell your grown-up why.
One sheet, three ways to pitch it
Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.
Support
If the sheet is new or the child is tired
The child points and the grown-up says the sentence, pausing for the child to add one word.
Core
The sheet as printed
The child names the animal and says one thing about it.
Challenge
If it was easy, or on the second day
Two sentences per picture, and the child asks the grown-up a question about one of the animals.
