Listen and point: small animals

Before you start

Three moments, no test

  1. 1

If they get stuck

Another day

What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet

Four numbered picture cards in two rows, numbered from the right: No words printed. This is a game of names, not animal sounds. One line at the top says

Skill: Listening, and matching the names of four small animals to their pictures. You will need: nothing at all. Your role: read aloud. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can hear a small animal's name and point to its picture.

  2. 2

Listen

Your grown-up names the four animals with you first, then says one name.

  3. 3

Explore

Point to the picture. Say the name back if you like.

  4. 4

Try

    A new name, then another.

  5. 5

Share

Your turn: choose a picture and say its name for your grown-up to find.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Two animals at a time. Say each name twice.

Core

The sheet as printed

All four names, each said once.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Two names in a row, then the child names all four from memory.
