Hear a shared beginning

Before you start

Three moments, no test

  1. 1

If they get stuck

Another day

What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet

Four numbered picture cards in two rows, numbered from the right: No words printed. The pair that starts the same is 1 and 3, مَوْز and مَاء, both with the sound م. One line at the top says

Skill: Hearing that two spoken words start with the same sound. You will need: nothing at all. Your role: read aloud. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can hear the same sound at the start of two words.

  2. 2

Listen

Your grown-up says مَوْز and مَاء. Listen to the very first sound of each.

  3. 3

Explore

Point to the two pictures whose words begin the same way.

  4. 4

Try

Now listen to مَوْز and سَمَكَة. Do they begin the same way? Say what you hear.

  5. 5

Share

Find one more word at home that starts like مَوْز.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Say the two words with the first sound stretched: mmmawz, mmmaa. Point to the pair together.

Core

The sheet as printed

Say the words in pairs and let the child decide which pair matches.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Say all four words once and ask for the matching pair with no help. Then ask for a fifth word from the room.
