Listen to familiar words

Before you start
Three moments, no test
- 1
If they get stuck
Another day
What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet
Four large numbered picture cards in two rows, numbered from the right: No word is printed under the pictures, on purpose: this is a listening sheet, the grown-up says the word and the child points. One line at the top says (I listen, then I point).
Skill: Listening, and matching a spoken word to a picture. You will need: nothing at all. Your role: read aloud. Prints well in black and white.
How the activity runs
Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.
- 1
Wonder
I can hear a word and point to its picture.
- 2
Listen
Your grown-up names the four pictures with you first, then says one word. Only listen.
- 3
Explore
Now point to the picture. Say the word back if you like.
- 4
Try
A new word, then another. If you point to the wrong one, listen again and try another.
- 5
Share
Your turn: choose a picture and say its word, and your grown-up points.
One sheet, three ways to pitch it
Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.
Support
If the sheet is new or the child is tired
Cover two cards and play with two pictures. Say the word twice, slowly.
Core
The sheet as printed
All four pictures. Say each word once, without looking at its card.
Challenge
If it was easy, or on the second day
Say two words in a row and ask for both, in order. Then swap roles.
