Wheels or legs?

Before you start

Three moments, no test

  1. 1

If they get stuck

Another day

What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet

Three labelled empty boxes (wheels, legs, neither), then a strip of six pictures with their Arabic names: car, cat, fish, bicycle, bird, toy train.

Skill: Sorting by how things move, and explaining a hard case. You will need: nothing at all. Your role: discuss. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can say how each thing moves, and explain the one that is hard to place.

  2. 2

Listen

Three boxes: wheels, legs, and neither.

  3. 3

Explore

Place each one, and say what you saw that told you.

  4. 4

Try

The bird and the fish are the hard ones. Where do they go?

  5. 5

Share

On your next walk, find one of each.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Two boxes and four things: car, cat, bicycle, train.

Core

The sheet as printed

Six things in three boxes, and the bird explained.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Name something that moves with no wheels, no legs, no fins and no wings.

This sheet is also part of the main library under its subject shelf.
