Big and small

Before you start

Three moments, no test

  1. 1

If they get stuck

Another day

What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet

Six pictures, three matched pairs, each pair the same object at clearly different sizes: كُرَة كَبِيرَة حَمْرَاء and كُرَة صَغِيرَة زَرْقَاء, سَمَكَة كَبِيرَة حَمْرَاء and سَمَكَة صَغِيرَة زَرْقَاء, نَجْمَة كَبِيرَة زَرْقَاء and نَجْمَة صَغِيرَة صَفْرَاء. Two empty labelled boxes above them to sort into.

Skill: Sorting the same object by size, and naming which is which. You will need: scissors, for the grown-up. Your role: observe. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can put the big ones in one place and the small ones in another.

  2. 2

Listen

One of each pair is big. One is small.

  3. 3

Explore

Put every big one in the first box.

  4. 4

Try

Then every small one in the second.

  5. 5

Share

Find something big and something small in this room.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

One pair only, the two balls. Big first, then small.

Core

The sheet as printed

All six, sorted.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Say WHY, out loud: 'this ball is bigger than that ball.'

This sheet is also part of the main library under its subject shelf.
