Optional word tracing: dog

Before you start

Three moments, no test

  1. 1

If they get stuck

Another day

What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet

The dog picture at the top, then the word كَلْب printed very large as a model, with its vowel marks. Under it one line, أَتْبَعُ بِإِصْبَعِي، أَوْ بِقَلَمٍ إِنْ أَرَدْتُ, and two wide tracing lines with the word printed in grey to follow. The sheet's address still says elephant from an earlier version; the page prints a dog.

Skill: Tracing the shape of a familiar word, optional, in the child's own way. You will need: a thick pencil or crayon, or just a finger. Your role: observe. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can follow the shape of a word I know.

  2. 2

Listen

Your grown-up points to the picture and the big word: this is the word

  3. 3

Explore

Follow the big word with your finger, from right to left.

  4. 4

Try

If you want, follow the grey word on the line with a crayon. One line is enough.

  5. 5

Share

Say the word, point to its picture, and show which part was easiest to follow.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Finger only, on the big model, with the grown-up's hand guiding the first stroke.

Core

The sheet as printed

Finger on the model, then one grey line with a crayon.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Both lines, and the child says the sound the word starts with before tracing.
