Listen and point: familiar animals

Before you start

Three moments, no test

  1. 1

If they get stuck

Another day

What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet

Four large numbered picture cards in two rows, numbered from the right: No word is printed under the pictures: the grown-up says the name and the child points. One line at the top says (I listen, then I point).

Skill: Listening, and matching an animal name to its picture. You will need: nothing at all. Your role: read aloud. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can hear an animal's name and point to its picture.

  2. 2

Listen

Your grown-up names the four animals with you first, then says one name. Only listen.

  3. 3

Explore

Now point to the picture. Say the name back if you like, in your own words too.

  4. 4

Try

A new name, then another. If you point to the wrong one, listen again and try another.

  5. 5

Share

Your turn: choose a picture and say its name, and your grown-up points.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Cover two cards and play with two animals. Say each name twice, slowly.

Core

The sheet as printed

All four animals. Say each name once, without looking at its card.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Say two names in a row and ask for both, in order. Then swap roles.
