Hear laam

Before you start

Three moments, no test

  1. 1

If they get stuck

Another day

What is worth noticing

What is on the sheet

Four numbered picture cards, numbered from the right: 1 سَمَكَة (fish), 2 لَيْمُون (lemon), 3 لِسَان (a tongue, shown on a face), 4 مَوْز (banana). No words and no letter printed. The answer cards are 2 and 3. The line at the top asks which word starts like the word you hear.

Skill: Finding spoken words that start with the sound ل. You will need: nothing at all. Your role: read aloud. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

I can find the words that start with the sound I heard.

  2. 2

Listen

Your grown-up names the tongue picture لِسَان first, then says لَيْمُون and makes the sound at its start: l.

  3. 3

Explore

Point to another picture whose word starts with that sound.

  4. 4

Try

Listen to لَيْمُون and سَمَكَة. Do they start the same? Say yes or no.

  5. 5

Share

Say a word of your own that starts with l.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Two pictures only, لَيْمُون and مَوْز. Say the l on its own before each word.

Core

The sheet as printed

All four pictures. The child finds both words that start with l.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Sort all four: starts with l, starts with s, starts with m.
