The parent guide for this sheet

Print page 1 for your child and read this guide on your phone. How we play together, and why

Before you start

  1. 1

    Parent prompt

  2. 2

    Parent prompt

  3. 3

    Parent prompt

Watch for

If they need help

If they want more

What is on the sheet

Four rows. In each row the grown-up reads two sound cards (سَمَ then كَة, مَدْ then رَسَة, سُلَحْ then فَاة, مِلْ then عَقَة) and the child points to the word they make among three pictures with their vowelled words, drawn from سَمَكَة (fish), مَدْرَسَة (school), سُلَحْفَاة (turtle) and مِلْعَقَة (spoon). A note says the words are longer this time, the gap is short, and faster is easier.

Skill: Blending spoken parts of longer words. You will need: nothing at all. Your role: read aloud. Prints well in black and white.

How the activity runs

Every sheet follows the same five moves, in this sheet’s own words. Read them once before you sit down; they are what page 1 asks the child to do.

  1. 1

Wonder

Blend two spoken parts of a longer word.

  2. 2

Listen

What word is that?

  3. 3

Explore

Point to the picture when you hear it.

  4. 4

Try

If you cannot, ask for it again faster. Faster is easier here.

  5. 5

Share

Now YOU break one and let me put it together.

One sheet, three ways to pitch it

Nothing to print twice. The same page is made gentler or harder by what the adult says and how much of it is used.

Support

If the sheet is new or the child is tired

Do ar-dd2 first, with its short words, then come back here.

Core

The sheet as printed

Four words, four pictures.

Challenge

If it was easy, or on the second day

Three pieces instead of two.
